Adult Orthodontic Treatment

Never! 25% of all orthodontic patients are adults. Health, happiness, and self-esteem are vitally important to adults. No patient is “too old” to wear braces!

Treatment time depends on each patient’s specific orthodontic problem. In general, treatment times range from 6 to 30 months. The “average” time frame a person is in braces is approximately 22 months.

It is impossible to give an exact cost for treatment until we have examined you. During the initial examination, we will discuss the actual cost and financial options. We have many financing options available to accommodate your needs, and we will review these with you. We will also review your insurance policy, help you maximize your benefits, and file your claims.

Appointments are scheduled according to each patient’s needs. Most patients in braces will be seen every five to ten weeks. If specific situations require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule appointments accordingly.

Generally, braces do not “hurt.” After certain visits, teeth may be sore for a few days. In these situations, pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease the discomfort. However, after most visits, patients do not feel any soreness at all! We often remind our patients, “It does not have to hurt to work!”

Braces and aligners are both orthodontic treatment options, but they work differently. Braces involve bonding brackets to the teeth and connecting them with wires, which are adjusted to move the teeth gradually. They are fixed, meaning they remain in place 24/7 and are often more effective for complex orthodontic cases. On the other hand, aligners are removable, clear plastic trays that fit over the teeth. A series of aligners are custom-made, each one slightly different, to progressively shift the teeth. Aligners offer greater aesthetics and the convenience of removal for eating and oral hygiene, but require discipline to wear as directed.

The choice between braces and aligners largely depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. If you prioritize aesthetics and the ability to easily remove your orthodontic appliance for eating and special occasions, aligners might be the better choice. However, if you have a complex orthodontic case or prefer a fixed solution that requires less discipline, braces could be the way to go. It's best to consult with an orthodontist to determine the most suitable option for your specific needs and goals.
